'Tent embassy' protesters urged to move on

A clash is looming at an Aboriginal "tent embassy" in Perth after the police commissioner urged the city council to order the protesters off a public reserve.

Protesters have been camped at Heirisson Island on the Swan River since mid-February, saying they oppose the WA government's proposed $1 billion native title deal with the Noongar people of the state's southwest.

Police and City of Perth rangers have moved on the camp twice in past weeks to remove tents pitched on the public reserve in breach of council by-laws, sparking angry scuffles and one arrest for an alleged assault on an officer.

Tents have since been put back up and tree branches torn off for the camp's fires, and protesters have been accused of abusing people in the park or on the river.

It has been alleged that a recent incident in which rocks were thrown from a nearby bridge at a boat, injuring people on board, was linked to the protest camp. Read More
