Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Wednesday moved a lower house motion to renew Australia's commitment to the eradication of all nuclear weapons.
The motion calls on nuclear-armed nations to cut their stockpiles and for states outside the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) to join.
It comes just days before Ms Gillard is due to join other world leaders in Seoul for the second Nuclear Security Summit, which is aimed at combating the threat of nuclear terrorism.
Ms Gillard declared nuclear weapons were a challenge all nations must address.
