Torrential rain drenches North Queensland

Extra emergency personnel have been sent to north Queensland as the region braces for more heavy rain over the next few days.

A tropical low in the state's Gulf Country is causing heavy rains, gale force winds and flash floods across parts of the north west and north.

The low is not expected to form a cyclone but there is a severe weather warning current for parts of the region.

Five Gulf Country schools have been closed today and authorities say conditions are making the emergency response effort difficult.

Flood warnings are in place from Cairns to Bowen, with more heavy rain forecast for most of the state's north today and tomorrow.
