Trayvon Martin Killing: FBI WILL investigate shooting of unarmed black teenager by Neighborhood Watch volunteer George Zimmerman

Following a day of protests calling for the arrest of a neighborhood watch captain who fatally shot an unarmed black teen, the U.S. Justice Department announced late last night that it will investigate the case.

George Zimmerman, 28, claimed he shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last month in self-defense during a confrontation in a gated community in Sanford, Florida.

The announcement of a federal investigation came after the devastated mother of Trayvon claimed the attack was racially motivated.

Speaking on the Today show, Sybrina Fulton, said that neighbourhood watch volunteer Zimmerman targeted her son because of ‘the colour of his skin.’

She said: ‘[My son] committed no crime. My son wasn’t doing anything but walking on the sidewalk.’

Zimmerman shot Trayvon once in the chest on the night of February 26 after the teenager bought iced tea and Skittles at a nearby 7-Eleven. Read More
